A Welcome Gift

This is what I found on my kitchen table when I came out of the office after feeding the baby to sleep. I thought I heard the door. My friend from up the road dropped off some of her home grown goodies.

Yum!

  1. How nice of your neighbor. Are those squashes the littlest one is playing with?

  4. They look like pumpkins. We never saw so many different ways to eat pumpkin while in Australia. We just couldn't eat the pumpkin on Pizza. That was a little much for us.

  5. They are squashes! But so big they are a little woody so I shall roast them with some potato's and mash them with butter, milk and salt&pepper for the children ,for tea.
Thanks Sarvi and Millie, are they fruit? guess so, they have seeds.
But you guys eat pumpkin pie don't you? I have not made that, but I do make a nice pumpkin pizza with olives, roast chicken and feta.

  7. Our bore water is too salty,so we cannot grow vegetables.
All her excess is gratefully received.

  8. Oh, that pumpkin pizza sounds wonderful, Nicole. I'll be making homemade pizza on Sunday. I should try some like that. Funny, I was just wondering the other day if you have tea in Australia. I sure wish my kids would eat something like that for a snack. I can't get either of them to even try mashed potatoes, let alone squash. I have to hide it in other things as purees. Maybe when they are older...

  9. That's exactly the pizza that sounded too strange to us. But I was also 5 months pregnant and still having morning sickness, which may have factored into my eating while there. We were also not fond of hamburgers with pickled beets. On their own, they are fine. We do make pumpkin pie, but I've only watched someone else make it from scratch. We make a lot of Mexican type food, so we tend to use the seeds from pumpkins for Pepitas.

  10. Try roasting the pumpkin first Sandi,it will be easier to peel and lock in those wonderful vitamins.
Jed and I have a hot lunch at 1 pm and the children have a hot tea at 5 pm and then supper at 7 pm.
Jed and I eat at 8 pm,usually something light. We are all 'foodies' and love all types of cooking.
If you were expecting Johanna I am not at all surprised that you did not fancy it!
What are pepitas, they sound yummy!

  11. They are roasted/salted/marinated pumpkin seeds. They go into a lot of Mexican dishes like Mole sauce or can be eaten on their own like sunflower seeds. Before becoming a sewing junkie, I was a bit of a foodie. This is one of my favorite recipes with them-

  15. For supper the children have cocoa made with all milk. I make it in a saucepan and I add the sugar to that so I control how much they have. Most Aussie children drink Milo which is tooth decay in a tin!(oh,I will get hate mail for that one)!
What they have varies, tonight it was 2 min noodles with cherry tomatoes, feta cheese and a little olive oil stirred through. Jed and I will have that later.
Sometimes it will be fruit cake and custard or pancakes with bananas. Other times sandwiches or cut up fruit. My children seem to eat a lot of food compared with their friends.

  16. Oh - so supper is what I call bedtime snack and tea is what I call dinner - I think I've got it!

  17. BTW - I make lots of homemade things to control what they get, too. Homemade "convenience foods" are standard here.
